Ever wondered what it takes to manage planning on complex builds? Zancon’s Managing Director Adam Zantis and Director Claudio Orellana break down the biggest challenges they face on major projects.
In this edition of 5 Minutes with an Expert, Adam and Claudio share candid reflections on one of the most common – and costly – challenges in complex construction projects: being brought in too late.
They explain that while demand for planning and programming has increased, it's still often undervalued early in a project's lifecycle. When planners are engaged too far down the track – often when delays have already occurred – the ability to make meaningful impact is severely limited.
Both Adam and Claudio highlight the importance of:
- Engaging planners early: Just as quantity surveyors are often embedded from the outset, planners should be too – to manage risk, anticipate delays, and provide options for mitigation.
- Planning as a proactive tool: Programs are living documents, not just schedules. They help look forward, flag potential issues, and give all stakeholders the chance to act before a delay becomes a crisis.
- Shared responsibility: Time-related risks shouldn’t be thrown "over the fence" from client to builder. Addressing them collaboratively from the start leads to better outcomes for everyone.
Their message is clear: strong planning isn’t just about deadlines—it’s about foresight, flexibility, and safeguarding the project's overall success.
